Thank You For Your Help
To Protect The Arctic Refuge
In a narrow vote of 51 to 49, the Senate voted today in favor of a federal budget provision to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling. While the outcome is a disappointment, it is not a defeat. This was an extremely close vote and the senators who listened to the American public and voted not to sacrifice this unique, unspoiled national treasure deserve our utmost thanks.
You also deserve our thanks! In the last few months we've called on you time and time again to help us stop attempts to allow drilling in the Arctic Refuge, and time and time again you responded by calling, writing, or visiting your senators and letting them know the Arctic Refuge is too wild too waste. Your dedicated actions and financial support have been crucial to this fight.
Despite today's vote, all is not lost for the Arctic Refuge and the wildlife that depend on it for survival. We still have a critical window of opportunity to keep Arctic drilling out of a final federal budget bill. We must send Congress and the administration a strong message that the American public will not stand idly by and let the nation's last remaining wild places be sacrificed in a misguided oil drilling frenzy.
